Child Safety, The Solo Campaign
An issue that has become more and more prominent recently and extensively documented in the press is that of child safety. Blinds for both domestic and commercial installations have been the focus of several campaigns recently and fuelled in particular by RoSPA (The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents). There are plans for the review of current legislation regarding operation cords and chains on blinds.
The current European standard (EN13120) relating to looped blind cords states that safety devices must be supplied and is currently being strengthened and its scope broadened. It is hoped that the revised standard will take effect sometime during 2012.
Solo are taking this as a number one priority and rolling out a safety campaign of its own to do everything within our power to reduce, minimise and ultimately eliminate the risk of injury posed by any kind of blind.
Solo now offer, at NO additional cost several systems covering all types of blinds to remove the “looped cord risk”.
Vertical blinds are now offered in a fully “wand” operated system. The control wand is used to both tilt the vanes and to draw them closed and open. This facilitates a completely cord and chain free system. The linking chain for the bottom weights is also removed and replaced with either Tag-In weights or Sewn-In weights. In addition, the control wand is Bio-Coated, an invisible anti-bacterial coating that kills 99% of bacteria including MRSA and E.Coli.
Roller blinds are available as a spring operated system or with a crank control, bothaid which are completely cord and chain free. If a traditionally standard chain operated roller is required, these can also be fitted with “Cord Tidy”, a simple device that is securely attached to the wall which keeps the control chain taught with no dangerous loop.
Venetian blinds are available with a wand control for the tilt function and often there is no requirement for the blinds to be lifted and therefore no additional cords would be necessary. However, if the lift operation is required, a cord device can be fitted which after use, can be used to lift any loose cord to a safe height.
In addition to all of the aforementioned systems, Solo also offer the option to motorise all blinds, a completely cord and chain free option, arguably one of the safest options of all.
Solo have been offering these systems for some time now and with the initiative of Solos’ campaign and the imminent change in legislations, we hope to make child injury or death as a result of blinds a thing of the past.
