How to Clean Venetian Blinds

How to Clean Venetian Blinds

Venetian blinds are iconic, and for good reason. They provide interiors with a sleek, modern look and they’re available in countless colours and different materials, meaning they can suit properties of any age and fit seamlessly into all types of interior design. Like any element of your home, it’s important to keep your Venetian blinds clean for aesthetic and hygiene purposes, and the team at Solo Blinds are going to talk you through the process of cleaning Venetian blinds.

Equipment needed for cleaning Venetian blinds

The main tools you’ll need for cleaning your Venetian blinds are: a cloth, a duster and a cleaning liquid, such as a window cleaning spray or a combination of washing up liquid and some warm water. You can use a vacuum to clean your blinds, but it’s best to do this only if you have an upholstery cleaning attachment – normal vacuum hoses may scratch the blinds.

If you have wooden Venetian blinds, think twice about using any liquid to clean them as you may stain them. Always consult with the manufacturer to determine what cleaning products are suitable first when considering any cleaning for your blinds.

How to clean Venetian blinds

The first thing you need to do when cleaning your Venetian blinds is to remove any stains – before removing dust and dirt, sticky marks need to be dealt with so that the cleaning process isn’t hampered. Using a cloth and either some window cleaning spray or a combination of warm water and detergent, wipe the stains away and then dry the area with a paper towel.

Once you’ve removed stains and dried the affected areas, you can now begin to dust the blinds. To do this, your blinds will need to be closed. Once closed, you just need to give them a wipe over with a duster or a microfibre cloth. After the first side has been completed, twist the blind wand to switch the slats to the opposite side, and clean them.

How to deep clean your Venetian blinds

If you haven’t cleaned your Venetian blinds for a long time, or if they’re particularly dirty, then you may want to consider a deep clean. Deep cleans can be done at home by yourself, but they require some extra care.

To deep clean your Venetian blinds, you need to remove them from the window completely, making sure to keep hold of all of the fastenings and components so that you can put them back up once they’re dry.

If cleaning your Venetian blinds indoors, place a rubber mat or towel in the bath so that your blinds don’t get damaged. You then need to use warm water and detergent – enough so that the blinds are submerged – and a sponge to clean each slat. Once you’ve cleaned each one, dry them off gently with a towel and then hang the blinds up to dry them thoroughly – consider leaving another absorbent sheet or mat below them to catch the drips.

Cleaning the blinds outdoors follows a similar process – you should lay a mat or sheet down to stop your blinds getting damaged, but you won’t be submerging the blinds. Instead, fill a bucket with the same warm water/detergent mix, and use a sponge to clean the blinds thoroughly. Once clean, hang them up so that they can dry.

When hanging your blinds to dry, try and avoid hanging them over warm radiators, as this can warp the blinds. Once dry, you can then refit them to your window and enjoy resplendent, immaculate window dressings.

Clean Venetian blinds not only look better, but the absence of dust makes for better air quality and, overall, better hygiene in your property. By following the guide in this article, you can make sure your Venetian blinds look their best.
