How to Clean Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds are one of the easiest styles to clean and maintain. With nothing but household cleaning equipment, you can get your vertical blinds looking as good as new. In this article, we provide tips and tricks for effectively cleaning vertical blinds.

What you’ll need

Everything you need to clean your vertical blinds should be found around the house

• Microfibre cloth
• Vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment
• Mild soap
• Bath
• Sponge
• Towel

Dust your blinds

You may choose to dust your vertical blinds before or after detaching them. Detaching your blinds will allow you to clean the handrail, too.

Use your microfibre cloth to dust your blinds. Simply move the cloth from top to bottom of each of the slats.

For particularly stubborn dust, we recommend using a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment. Gently glide the vacuum cleaner down each slat to capture the remaining dust.

Wash your blinds

Bring your blinds over to your bathtub to clean. Fill the tub with a mixture of warm water and mild soap. Only use lukewarm water when cleaning your vertical blinds. Water that is too cold may fail to remove some of the more stubborn stains. Water that is too hot may melt the adhesive used to keep the weights inside the bottom seam of the blinds. Hot water may also damage the fabric.

Use a sponge or cloth to wipe the marks off each slat. Use one continuous motion and avoid scrubbing too hard as this can cause scuffs and marks.

Once you have cleaned all the marks from your vertical blinds, rinse the blinds down with warm water and dab any excess moisture with a towel.

Drying your blinds

Lay your blinds on a flat surface to dry. Avoid hanging them where possible. Drying your blinds on a flat surface will encourage them to maintain their natural shape. You can air dry your blinds by opening windows. This will speed up the process.

Can I put vertical blinds in the washing machine?

Refer to the manufacturer’s guide to establish whether your blinds are suitable for the washing machine. If they are suitable, we recommend rolling up your blinds and placing them into a machine-washable bag or pillow case before placing it into the machine. You should also wash them in a slow spin and use blinds-friendly detergent to prevent the removal of any protective coating your blinds may have.

Do not put your blinds in the tumble dryer. The hot temperatures can melt the adhesive in your blinds and damage the fabric. Once your blinds have finished in the washing machine, place them on a flat surface and allow them to air dry.

How often should I clean my vertical blinds?

General dusting should be done as part of your weekly or monthly cleaning routine. Gentle washes should be done once every couple of months. However, feel free to clean them more regularly if you find that they are getting dirty quite easily.
